Aurélie Dorzée on violin and vocals and multi instrumentalist/singer Tom Theuns are back with drummer and percussionist Stephan Pougin. Ten new compositions and two covers are the basic ingredients for this best album until today by this trio. With wonderful melodies, creative twists and a balanced mixture of folk, world, craziness and rock, Aurelia takes the Belgian folk to a whole new level.

I love Issa where a sweet melody turns into a small nightmare with great electronics and a drunken brother of Tom Waits who crawled on stage and sings along with the female singer. Great how the band switches from a song like that to El commandante which is a small, easy going acoustic folk tune and to chanson styled tracks like Le chat de la mazurka and Elle attend. And as easy they go back to a more psych output like Page which is followed by a beautiful version of Ave Maria sung by Laure Delcampe.

With this new album Aurelia proofs to be one of the most inventive European folk related groups. They go further were earlier groups like Ambrozijn and Olla vogala left us, they have the same atmosphere, at moments the same recognizable sound but in a totally new context. Totally different than a group like Aranis, but with the same creativity and intensity.

The Hour of the Wolf is proof again that a small country like Belgium is big in modern acoustic (more or less) folk related music.

To jedna z tych plyt, które z pewnoscia, zgramy w Ossobliwosciach. Mazurek, Bolero i to nie wszystko – nie ma co o w szystkim pisac, by byla jakas niespodzianka przy sluchaniu.

Aurélie Dorzée, Tom Theuns, Stephan Pougin To akustyczne trio, gdzie mozliwosci brzmieniowe sa przeogromne, a wrazliwosc muzyczna tak wielka, ze w zasadzie owej 12-ki nie slucha sie jak recitalu – to muzyka do lektury, smakowania – muzyka z wewnetrzna narracja rozpisana na gitary, banjo, fortepian, harmonium, sitar, elektronike, skrzypce, altówke, spiew meski i kobiecy, skrzypce z tubka (o jak dawno nie widziany instrument), bebny i perkusja. Ave Maria – goscinnie spiewa w stylu cmentarny pop, Laure Delcampe – raz tylko pojawiaja sie lekko zelektryfikowane gitary i nie burzy to owej teatralnej, skupionej, kameralnej atmosfery.

För övrigt är det ganska spretigt. På ett trevligt vis. Övriga muskier är Tom Theuns som spelar stränginstrument, bland annat distad elgitarr vilket ar befriande skönt att hora på en av alla dessa välproducerade varldsmusikskivor. Och Trummisen Stephan Pougin jazzar så där lagorn improvisatoriskt och på slutet sjungs Ave Maria av en gästsångerska I en lite märklig men ganska traditionell version, innan natten går till anda, vid lunch, I låt nummer XII. Och titeln på cd:n, The hour of the wolf syftar faktiskt på ett citat Ingmar Bergman.

The hour of the wolf is the hour just before dawn. It is the hour where most people die, when sleep is deepest and where dreams and nightmares are most real. It is also the hour where most children are born.

In creating their third CD, Aurelia went in search for this state of mind whereby these underlying currents of emotions were used to outline their compositions and arrangements. This resulted in an introspective but very caleidoscopic palette of compositions and acoustic sounds.
The CD kicks of with a delirious version of Brigitte Fontaine’s « Nous sommes fous » (we are all mad), followed by a cuban revolutionary party and a diabolic version of Shubert’s Ave Maria. Besides their usual lineup (violin, acoustic guitar and percussion) , you can also distinguish the sitar, banjo,harmonium, piano and ethnical vocal sounds.
